Boulders & Outcropping

An outcropping is a visible exposure of bedrock. Outcropping is most often a larger, thicker, bulkier piece of stone generally used to accent an area of key interest within a landscape.  They may be flat, rounded, oblong, squared or completely irregular in shape.  Outcropping is a key element used in water features.

While a boulder may be small enough to move or roll manually, others are extremely massive. In common usage, a boulder is too large for a person to move.  Small boulders are generally referred to as rocks or stones.  Boulders typically have some sort of “roundness” to them distinguishing them from outcropping or ledgestone in a landscaping area.
