Spider Mites
Use of broad-spectrum insecticides such as carbaryl (Sevin) may eliminate mite predators, allowing a rapid increase of mite numbers. Selective control of mites is available with miticides such as abamectin (Avid), bifenthrin (Talstar), dicofol (Kelthane), or Neem oil, insecticidal soap or a high purity horticultural oil. If you use a miticide, frequent chemical applications may be necessary and not very effective if plants are not also washed with water. When hosing off the plant, make sure to rinse the entire plant, top to bottom, as well as the undersides of the leaves using a hard spray of water. Once spider mites are knocked off of the plant, they can’t crawl back. The watering should be done in the morning or early evening so that the leaves can dry before nightfall. You don’t want to trade one scourge for another! The product(s) Alsip Home & Nursery recommends to use the following:

Thrips
Keep growing areas as weed-free as possible by pulling and bagging weeds that may harbor pests. Use of herbicides is not recommended because pests may survive and relocate to other crop plants. Develop a weed-free zone around the perimeter of the greenhouse to discourage thrips and other pests. Avoid wearing brightly colored clothing that may attract thrips and give them a free ride to uninfected locations. Neem oil, horticultural oil, hot pepper wax, insecticidal soaps, and garlic extracts are biorational pesticides that may provide some relief from thrips. Consult your local distributor to see which products are recommended for your situation and whether they are compatible with biological agents. The product Alsip Home & Nursery recommends to use the following:
- Bonide Systemic Insect Control - available as a spray.

White Flies
Begin chemical control treatments in the garden as soon as you notice an infestation. Because insecticides are not effective against immature stages of whiteflies, applications need to be made every four days to kill adults before they begin to lay eggs for the next generation. Up to 7 applications may be needed to bring well-established infestations under control. Also, eliminate weeds in and around the garden that may harbor infestations. Malathion is the most readily available insecticide for whitefly control, but rotenone and nicotine sulfate may also be used. The product Alsip Home & Nursery recommends to use:
- Bonide All Seasons Spray Oil

Mealy Bugs
Flushing mealybugs off leaves with water can provide some immediate relief, but rubbing off colonies with a cloth is recommended so crawlers are removed and/or crushed and not merely displaced. Insecticidal soaps and horticultural oils (when not phytotoxic) are most effective if they are applied underneath leaves, on pots, as well as areas surrounding plants where crawlers could migrate. Pesticides can provide short-term control, but mealybugs persist in hard-to-reach places so they are not recommended as a long-term solution. If pesticides are used, waiting at least two weeks before releasing biological control agents is advised. The product Alsip Home & Nursery recommends to use:
- Bonide Systemic Insect Control - which is also available in a spray.

Aphids
Small numbers of individual colonies of Aphids on small plants can be crushed by hand or removed by pruning as they are found. In some cases, this may provide adequate control. Fatty acid salts or insecticidal soaps are very good against aphids. As with summer oils, they apparently work to disrupt insect cell membranes. They require direct contact with the insects and leave no residual effect. The aphids must be hit directly with spray droplets so that they can be absorbed into the insect's body. Plants that become infected with an aphid-borne virus may be severely stunted and may die. Preventive sprays are rarely effective in keeping viruses out of plantings but they may reduce the spread within a group of susceptible plants. The product Alsip Home & Nursery recommends to use:
- Bonide Tree & Shrub 12 Month Protect & Feed

Tent Caterpillars & Bag Worms
